University of Waterloo
The Information Systems and Science for Energy (ISS4E) laboratory at the University of Waterloo spans the School of Computer Science and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Researchers in the ISS4E laboratory apply their expertise in Information Systems and Sciences to find innovative solutions to large-scale problems in energy systems, working synergistically with researchers in related disciplines, as well as with partners in industry, and aiming to have impact both in Canada and around the world. Relevant current projects include fine-grained building and home energy use monitoring, use of teletraffic analysis to model electricity storage, and the application of Internet congestion control techniques to model and study Demand Response in the Smart Grid. The laboratory commenced work in this area in Fall 2010 and therefore does not have prior projects in the area. However, it is led by senior faculty, who each have more than two decades of experience in Internet technology and it works closely with the Power Systems Group at the University of Waterloo, which is one of the world’s largest academic groups working on power systems research.
